Worship Through Music
Music has always had a special place in our worship service. Each Sunday, the music helps to ease the burdens we bring with us and focus our minds on the elements of our worship; it opens the doors of our souls and brings us closer to God. While most of our music is drawn from the classical traditions, we celebrate the diversity of music with excursions into other styles.
Our candlelight “Festival of Lessons and Carols”on Christmas Eve is a treasured holiday tradition at First Baptist. Patterned on the traditional service at King’s College Chapel, Cambridge, the service has been presented annually since 1969.
Our music program is professionally directed and accompanied. We have an adult choir, a handbell choir and two children’s choirs. The children’s choirs participate regularly in worship services as well as in at least one major musical production each year. Offering our children, as well as other children in the community, an opportunity to express themselves through music, allows them to receive a gift that will enrich their entire lives. It also provides a creative outlet for many adults in our congregation through support of our two children’s choirs.
Ever found yourself humming along with the Sanctuary Choir on a Sunday morning? Whether you have or not, now is your chance to join the Sanctuary Choir. An ability to read music is helpful, (but not necessary), and a love of singing, good fellowship and a sense of humor are essential. The Sanctuary Choir rehearses on Thursday evenings from 7:30-9:00 pm and on Sunday mornings before services beginning at 9:15 am. Childcare is provided during rehearsals. Attendance is flexible according to your schedule.
