During this season of vacations and travels, I have one question for you: how do you know what to pack?

In my experience, this is one of the most anxiety-making parts of getting ready for a trip – figuring out what to take and what to leave behind. Because what if you get to your destination and discover you failed to bring the one thing it turned out you absolutely needed? “All In”

This past week our church website committee, which is in charge of overseeing the redesign of our church website, was given an unusual assignment. The design firm we are working with asked us to fill out a kind of “Mad Lib.” Do you remember “Mad Libs”? It’s a template word game where you fill our a series of blanks with whatever word you choose and then you see what kind of paragraph or story you have created. Our “Mad Lib” was designed to help our committee state, in a focused way, what is most essential to communicate to other people about who our church is. The paragraph began, “We are the only _______________ that _________________.”

It was a struggle. Because no matter how I filled in the blanks, what it sounded like hubris. “We are the only congregation in Ann Arbor that….” what? No matter what you put there – unless it’s horrible – it’s going to sound self-promoting. Read the whole story…
