“Little Things, Big Things”

Jesus was very attuned to small things. Like a child, he had a studious love of the little. He saw a dead sparrow on the ground and said God cared about it. He noticed two little pennies in an offering plate and called them enormously significant. He took time with little children, said we should ponder wildflowers and meadowlarks, spoke of yeast, salt, a coin. He spoke often of seeds, made up stories about them, said the tiniest of them is like the Kingdom of God. Look at these little things, he kept saying, listen to their tiny voices; they’re shouting to you of God’s Reign among you. The famous Roman orator, Cicero, said, “The gods attend to great matters; they neglect small ones.” Jesus said God knows the number of hairs on your head!
