“Welcome, Angel”

One of the most beautiful words in the English language is welcome. Welcome. Two syllables: the first one broadening your lips to a smile – wel; the second one ending with mmmm! It’s a word with open arms. And it is being said all over town this week. Welcome to the class, welcome to the dorm, welcome to the group, welcome to our church. One of my heroes, Fred Craddock, tells this story from his Appalachian boyhood. One summer night he and his father were out in the back yard. Fred was lying on his back looking up at the stars. His father said, “Son, how far can you think?”

“I don’t know. What do you mean?”
